"If I have a boy, I'll teach him how to love. If I have a girl, I'll tell her the world is hers."
Denis really knows how to make a bitch cry.

Film #47 of Make me watch your favourite. Recommended by Marcelo Valentim.
I did not know anything about the shooting this film is based on. After watching it I felt compelled to do a bit of research on it and I think that this made me appreciate the film even more.
In this shooting, a young disturbed man killed 14 young women, for the sole reason that he believed them to be feminists and feminism was his enemy. Apparently his motives are still cause for debate and remain unclear, providing a platform for various groups to use this incident to rally a cause.
Villeneuve's film is not concerned about that and that is where its strength lies. It zooms in…

One of the most powerful and haunting films I've ever seen.
I truly had no idea what I was getting myself into.
Constant tears throughout the final fifteen minutes.
Absolutely speechless.
Villeneuve's masterpiece (next to Sicario).

Beautifully shot but if I’m being honest there’s not much else I got from it. Films don’t always have to have nuanced messages or important critiques but when it’s this subject matter personally I think more should be done. Maybe a longer runtime would’ve helped some ideas be further fleshed out, and with these types of films personally I always feel like it’s weird to focus on one or two specific people rather than everyone. Also, this is incredibly random but sometimes I think directors don’t even know why they shoot in black and white, they just do it to be different and a lot of the time it’s unneeded.

"I have decided to send the feminists, who have always ruined my life, to their maker."
What an incredible emotional powerhouse of a film! As the jaded critic that I'm becoming, I'm rarely taken in so forcefully and at such a fundamental level, but this left me absolutely floored. Villeneuve grabs your attention with the opening and then holds it in a vice grip, leaving no room for escape. He also makes the difficult, praiseworthy decision to show this story of unspeakable horror from both angles (from three angles, actually), making the antagonist sympathetic and more than just another mindless villain. And he does all this with very little dialogue.
What impressed me most beyond the emotional immediacy of the…

Action! - Three Auteurs: Denis, The Québecian Master
This was the earliest film I’ve seen from Denis a while ago, when I did a little marathon in preparation for Blade Runner 2049 if I am not mistaken. And like this time around, I remember liking it.
A very heartbreaking real-life story. School, college, or any other form of shooting is already a tragic event. You add that to the motives. Maybe you can look at some of the ironic twists. Whenever you look at it, its such an awful event that Villeneuve does a really good job depicting it with the most utter respect one can do with events like this. The great use of music in key moments heightens…
