What to Know

Critics Consensus

Extinction has a few intriguing ideas, but they -- and some game performances from its talented stars -- are lost in the movie's muddled plot and frustrating pacing.

Extinction (2018) | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Meagan Navarro Bloody Disgusting It's a simple, efficient sci-fi thriller with big Blockbuster aspirations but without much charisma or soul. Rated: 2/5 Jul 3, 2019 Full Review Extinction (2018) | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Brad Newsome Sydney Morning Herald The big twist is a good one, there are some decent action sequences and Lizzy Caplan is always good to watch, but there isn't enough here to keep things from dragging. Aug 17, 2018 Full Review Extinction (2018) | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Roxana Hadadi Pajiba It's a narrative that is familiar in most of sci-fi, but how thoroughly this film follows that preceding movie's beats is disappointingly uncreative. Aug 2, 2018 Full Review Extinction (2018) | Rotten Tomatoes (4) David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...somewhat generic and tedious... Rated: 2/4 Jun 4, 2023 Full Review Extinction (2018) | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Mike Massie Gone With The Twins Feels as if it would work better as a pilot for a television series - perhaps chiefly because the conclusion is a mere setup for further tales in this speculative world. Rated: 5/10 Dec 6, 2020 Full Review Extinction (2018) | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Alex Hudson Exclaim! For such talented actors, these are truly deplorable performances. YORIEN ARIESTY H Definitely not bad at all, I don’t understand why the movie was underrated, it’s better than many movies nowaday Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review David D An interesting premise does not a film make. Rated 1.5/5 Stars • Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/29/24 Full Review Danny M S Albeit with laudable performances from the main adult characters, the plot was kind of weak, trying to riff on a Bladerunner / AI dystopia theme which felt a bit cliche. I enjoyed the cinematography though, nice angles lighting and framing. Wasn't sure what the "attackers" were supposed to be to begin with. From the sound effects used which were extremely close to the actual Aliens franchise sounds, I thought they were some kind of extra-terrestrial, which lead me to think the costume design was unimaginative, poor....just a way to save budget even, but once it was revealed what they really were, it made sense...finally! However that kind of spoiled the movie early on for me.What could have been a very good movie was spoilt by missing a few key elements that would have made it more plausible and maintain suspension of disbelief. 1. Their defensive weaponry should have been far more varied than just rifles, like they should have had an air force as well as an army in place rather than what appeared to just be a bunch of civilians. 2. Sound effects were mis-matched in my opinion. 3. Some of the plot devices such as "dream sequences" and "annoying children" were over used.Just my two cents! Still, a fairly fun flick in all fairness, Rated 2.5/5 Stars • Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/23/24 Full Review Isla J It's honestly not so bad. I have to admit, the first part is kind of awkward and there are plenty of moments that just seemed "off"? Perhaps it was how the scenes were cut or angled? But the plot is good and I'm hoping that there's a sequel should there's be an improvement on the "awkwardness". Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/06/24 Full Review Tijs v I think it is a short but decent movie. I did not expect the big twist. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/27/24 Full Review MIKE C Liked the twists. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/21/24 Full Review Read all reviews
